A Next-Generation ACCUPLACER practice test covering Reading, Writing, and Math (Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning/Algebra/Statistics, and Advanced Algebra) — plus a full answer key with rationales for every question.

About this guide

The Next-Generation ACCUPLACER is the placement test most U.S. community colleges and universities use to determine which English and math courses you start in — skip the right courses and you save real time and tuition money. It's not pass/fail; it's about landing in the course level that actually matches your skills.

What Does the ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Test Cover?

The test is untimed and adapts to your answers, and is split into three subject areas colleges can assign in any combination:

  • Reading — understanding and analyzing informational and literary passages.
  • Writing — grammar, sentence structure, and revising/editing passages.
  • Math — three levels: Arithmetic, Quantitative Reasoning/Algebra/Statistics (QAS), and Advanced Algebra and Functions (AAF).

Most colleges only require the sections relevant to your intended courses, so you may only take one or two of the three. There's no fixed "passing score" — instead, your score places you into a specific course level, and requirements vary by school.

Next-Generation ACCUPLACER Scores: What Do They Mean?

Each section of the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER is scored on a 200–300 scale (this replaced the older "Classic" ACCUPLACER's 20–120 scale). There's no single passing score — each college sets its own cutoffs for each course — but scores generally fall into three placement bands:

  • 200–249 — typically places into foundational/developmental coursework.
  • 250–262 — often places into introductory or "bridge" college-level courses.
  • 263–300 — typically places directly into standard credit-bearing college courses.

These bands are a general guide, not a universal chart — always confirm the exact cutoff scores with your specific college's testing or admissions office, since they can and do vary by institution.

How to Do Well on the ACCUPLACER

  1. Find out from your college which sections you actually need to take — don't study material you won't be tested on.
  2. Since the test adapts to your answers, work carefully rather than quickly; there's no reason to rush an untimed test.
  3. Brush up on core algebra (systems of equations, absolute value, percent problems) before the Math sections.
  4. For Reading and Writing, practice identifying the main idea of a passage and spotting grammar errors in context.
  5. Use scratch paper to set up word problems as equations before solving — most Math errors come from translating the words wrong, not the arithmetic.
  6. Review every practice question you miss and understand why the right answer is right, not just what it is.

ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Sample Math Questions & Answers

Try these sample questions in the style of the real ACCUPLACER Math sections. Full explanations are included so you can see exactly why each answer is correct.

1. Based on the table below, which equation could express the relationship between x and y?

x: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 → y: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10

  • A. y = x + 2
  • B. y = 2x
  • C. y = 2x + 2
  • D. y = 3x + 2

Answer: C. Testing y = 2x + 2 against the table: when x = 0, y = 2; when x = 1, y = 4; when x = 4, y = 10 — all match.

2. At a used book sale, Sarah bought x paperback books priced at $0.25 each and y hardcover books priced at $0.45 each. She bought 8 books total and paid $2.60. Which system of equations gives x and y?

  • A. x + y = 8 ; 0.25x + 0.45y = 2.6
  • B. x + y = 8 ; 0.45x + 0.25y = 2.6
  • C. x + y = 2.6 ; 0.25x + 0.45y = 8
  • D. xy = 8 ; 2.6xy = 1

Answer: A. The total number of books gives x + y = 8, and the total cost (paperbacks at $0.25 plus hardcovers at $0.45) gives 0.25x + 0.45y = 2.6.

3. A figure is a semicircle of radius x. What is its perimeter?

  • A. (π + 1)x
  • B. (π + 2)x
  • C. (2π + 1)x
  • D. (2π + 2)x

Answer: B. The perimeter of a semicircle is the curved arc (half the circle's circumference, πx) plus the straight diameter (2x), giving πx + 2x = (π + 2)x.

4. |2x − 1| = 2x − 1 if and only if:

  • A. x ≤ ½
  • B. x ≤ 2
  • C. x ≥ 0
  • D. x ≥ ½

Answer: D. The absolute value of a quantity equals the quantity itself only when that quantity is non-negative, so 2x − 1 ≥ 0, which simplifies to x ≥ ½.

5. The price of a shirt, after a 20 percent reduction, is p dollars. In terms of p, what was the original price?

  • A. 1.80p
  • B. 1.25p
  • C. 1.20p
  • D. 0.80p

Answer: B. If the original price is x, a 20% reduction gives p = 0.80x, so x = p / 0.80 = 1.25p.

6. What is the median of the first nine positive integers?

  • A. 4.5
  • B. 5
  • C. 5.5
  • D. 6

Answer: B. The first nine positive integers are 1 through 9; the median (middle value) is the 5th value, which is 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER?

It's a computer-adaptive placement test used by community colleges and universities to determine which English and math courses you should start in. It replaced the original "Classic" ACCUPLACER and covers Reading, Writing, and three levels of Math (Arithmetic, QAS, and Advanced Algebra and Functions).

How long does the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER take?

There's no fixed time limit — it's untimed and adapts to your answers as you go. Most students finish a single section in about 30–45 minutes; if your college requires the full battery (Reading, Writing, and all Math levels), plan for roughly 2–3 hours total.

What is a good score on the Next-Generation ACCUPLACER?

Scores run from 200–300 per section, and there's no universal "good" score — it depends entirely on which course level you're aiming for and your specific college's cutoffs. Generally, scores in the 263–300 range place students directly into standard credit-bearing courses, while lower scores may place you into a bridge or developmental course first.

The full ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Practice Test includes a complete set of Reading, Writing, and Math practice questions with a full answer key and rationales for every question — so you always know why an answer is right, not just what it is.
